Opening Address

Environmental Resilience, Energy, Water and Waste

The panel will discuss the implications of climate change and environmental challenges on our water resources. They will discuss the need for collaboration across the water sector and academia, with an understanding that this will require an interdisciplinary approach championed by the Centre for Resilience in Environment, Water and Waste (CREWW).

The panel will discuss nature-based solutions to flooding, drought and other water resource management issues, and how this impacts the business at South West Water, the opportunities for which resolution can be solved through partnership and wider stakeholder engagement through mutual understanding such as CREWW's ambitions and public engagement.

Environmental Sustainability

This session will include two presentations alongside a Q&A and will explore issues and potential solutions around soil erosion, soil health, and the sensor technology that has been implemented in recent successful projects.

We will also delve into nature-inspired solutions to sustainable chemical, fuel, and energy production from waste and biomass. As well as an insight to the University of Plymouth’s new Centre of Research excellence in Intelligent and Sustainable Productive Systems (CRISPS)

Digital innovation within health and social care in the region

This panel will discuss two pivotal sector-wide transformations driving digital innovation within health and social care in the South West of England: major capital projects including the NHS New Hospital Programme and Data Orchestration Command and Control Centres - both essential to meet the Government's ambitions of a digital-first and Net Zero NHS. Future capital projects will involve the comprehensive integration of technology into fabric, footprint, and flow, while command and control centres will harness the insights of clinical, environmental, and other data through nested orchestration layers and the intelligent use of AI, to provide predictive person-centred care community-based care. The discussions will draw on real world case studies and highlight opportunities for both local innovations and strategic partnerships between industry, academia and health and social care.

Investing in nature: the implications and opportunities for innovation

The UK is one of the world’s most nature-depleted nations. How can businesses and developers help to restore nature and natural landscapes? Does on-site and off-side mitigation work, and what does best practice look like? What technology - especially around AI - do we need to verify ecological gain as biodiversity credits and Biodiversity Net Gain are rolled out, and how do we ensure that increased investment of private finance in biodiversity is a credible solution?

The panel will discuss the trials, tribulations, risks and opportunities surrounding biodiversity credits and off-setting. Explore what the new market and business opportunities are and how off-setting might provide additional and new investment into our region.
